Hawk & Dove Trilogy - new ed.

December

The Hawk and The Dove, by Penelope Wilcock.
Most teen girls wouldn’t turn to a 13th century monastery for help with the trials and tribulations of today’s world. Then again, Melissa was always different. In this compelling trilogy, Melissa turns to her mother’s stories of Father Peregrine and his monks for comfort when all the world seems to misunderstand her. As the monks work through the troubles of humiliation, misunderstanding, and Christianity, Melissa begins to see how the lessons she learns apply to her daily life and personal walk with God.

Too Christian Too Pagan, hardcover ed.

Too Christian, Too Pagan, by Dick Staub.
It's a book about life, about living as a Christian in the corrupt world of today. It's trite to say that it's changed my life, but this book truly has. More...

Ben-Hur cover - new ed.

February

Ben-Hur: A Story of the Christ, by Lew Wallace.
This classic tale with its fantastic and spellbinding plot will keep almost anyone in suspense for the duration of the (surprisingly long) tale. The character development alone makes this book worth reading, but the book itself is a wonderful piece of literature. Older readers will enjoy turning the pages, but it also makes a good read-aloud book for the younger set. It is surprisingly unlike the movie, so be prepared for a good read and a few surprises, even if the plot sounds familiar.

March

The Bride Wore White by Danah Gresh and Who Moved the Goalpost by Bob Gresh. The Bride Wore White Who Moved the Goalpost
There are so many dating/courtship/relationship/young adult books on the market today that it takes something really special to make one of them stand apart, but the Greshs' two books, The Bride Wore White and Who Moved the Goalpost, have everything it takes. Both books contain many similar themes, drawing youths towards purity and away from temptation, and covering almost everything in between. Readers are encouraged to look for the right kind of future mate while making themselves into the best spouses they can be. While the books don't advocate either dating or courtship specifically, they feature good, sound advice, practicable to either relationship style, which should prove advantageous to almost all romantically inclined youths.

The Portal - new ed.

April

The Portal by Bill Myers.
Denny and Nathan, two rivals in almost everything, find a new twist in their relationship when they are suddenly transported to another planet by three most extraordinary creatures. While they are there, Nathan is kidnapped into a cone of selfishness, and Denny and her three new friends must fight to save him, if it will only be soon enough! The ending provides a touching illustration of Christ's sacrifice to save the world.

Death Be Not Proud, opt. 1 Death Be Not Proud, opt. 2

May

Death Be Not Proud by John Gunther.
John Gunther, Jr. was only sixteen when the doctors found a brain tumor and began a long series of tests, operations, and experiments in an effort to destroy the tumor before it destroyed the boy. Although he did not have a Christian worldview, John was a truly remarkable boy, full of wit, intelligence, and courage. In this book, John's father caputures both the good and bad things from the last months of John's life, including sadness and pain with the joys and triumph. The book itself is a beautiful testimony of courage.

The Robe

June

The Robe by Lloyd Douglas.
When Marcellus, a Roman soldier, ends up with Christ's robe, he finds himself strangely fascinated by the man who once wore it. As he journeys in search of the truth about the man named Jesus, he is confronted with not only the answers to his questions but some revelations about himself. The book is an eye-opener for all ages, and also contains some interesting history.

Passion and Purity

July

Passion and Purity by Elizabeth Elliott.
This is a love story. Not a sappy romance where the characters drool over one another and engage in mad acts of so-called blazing passion, but one where the gentleman is as close to a knight in gleaming armor as a mortal can get, and where his beloved lady is as pure as a fresh-plucked lily. And yet this does not mean they have no troubles. Elizabeth painstakingly relates the struggles of their relationship, their desires to stay pure, to honor one another, and, above all, to glorify God. It isn't always easy; like the rest of us, they often fail several times before they succeed. But the story is honest, beautiful, and breathtaking, told with simplicity and a startling truthfulness. My daughter, when I have one, will be reading this book.

Green Dolphin Street

August

Green Dolphin Street by Elizabeth Goudge.
Parallel stories in this book only add to the intensity and compelling traits of the plot. Young William falls in love not only with a girl, but with his God, who calls him far away from his friends and into the midst of a tribe of natives. As he faces trial after trial, including an incorrect bride and an antagonistic tribesman, he tries again and again to follow God, whatever the cost. Meanwhile, two girls far, far away live a different story, striving to find life --and God-- in a different way. When one is called to join William and the other is not, they each react differently, and are touched because of it.

Rich Mullins: An Arrow to Heaven

September

Rich Mullins: An Arrow to Heaven by James Byron Smith.
The Christian music world mourned the death of artist Rich Mullins heavily about five years ago, and many still miss his inspiring words and strivings to do the will of God. Rich's testimony is powerful, impressive, and blatantly human; the story his friend Smith tells is one that will inspire and challenge Christians to new heights as they read and enjoy.
